According to a recent purchaser, the Ravin’s R29 is “Worth every penny.”

What Makes This Crossbow Great

Meet your next game with the Ravin R29 let’s see who wins. From front to back, top to bottom, this bow is a beast. Let’s begin with the HeliCoil Technology advantage. First, it creates a 100% frictionless shot for faster speed and improved accuracy.

Next, the R29’s coiling cable technology creates a perfect balance between the limbs. This happens from a 340-degree cam (wheel) rotation for efficient and effective performance. Plus, the perfectly leveled string increases the lifetime of the string.\

The R29 has a built-in cocking system called Versa-Draw. This technology creates a silent cocking processes with only a draw weight of 12 pounds. It’s easy for nearly anyone to fully crank.

The Barnett HyperGhost crossbow is this year’s best mid-range deer hunting crossbow for the money, hands down.

What Makes This Crossbow Great

Packaged with Barnett’s exclusive HyperFlite arrows that are designed to increase speed and power will help you take down the game you’re aiming at this hunting season. This is a one-shot kill kind of crossbow, and if you’ve been waiting to get into the mid-range price level, I’d say the HyperGhost is your pick. I’ve heard another hunter call the HyperGhost, the “most badass bow for the money,” and his words are pretty spot on.

When you place the order for this bow, you’re getting more than just an average crossbow. The people at Barnett make this a hunter’s complete set up by including the scope and arrows too. But let’s talk more about what the HyperGhost packs on its bow, because the specs are pretty amazing. The first thing I need to list is the custom trigger upgrade provided on this crossbow. The Frictionless Release Technology gives the shooter a smooth, tender trigger that’s unparalleled to any other bow in this price range. Not only are the shots great, but the safety of the trigger is too. Any avid hunter knows how important this is. The anti-dry fire gives you the piece of mind that you won’t dry shoot the bow. As they say, “Once you go TriggerTech, you’ll never go back.” I highly recommend checking it out.

Who This Bow is Best For
For the budget-minded hunter who doesn’t want a cheap crossbow. This HyperGhost will knock your socks off and keep your wallet in tact. This is the value-buyer’s bow.

The most popular “upgrade bow” is here. If you began with a cheaper starter bow, and now am looking to see what’s the next best, the Whitetail Pro is your bow.

What Makes This Crossbow Great

I recommend this particular Barnett bow as a step-up bow because Barnett has given their non-flagship models some upgrades. Here’s what happened: in the past, Barnett matched their patented step-through riser technology only with their elite flagship crossbows. However, they have begun adding this technology to their mid-range bows as well. This is great news for hunters looking for value.

With this new offering, now only do hunters now get premium performance from a well-trusted brand, but also a great price for a solid hunting bow. The Whitetail Pro STR is a great pick for those looking to up their deer-hunting game due to this bow’s high speed and accuracy.

As the name ensures, the handling involved with shooting this bow makes it feel like it’s in a pro class. In combination with the TriggerTech frictionless release technology, the string dampeners and fiberglass riser, this makes for a great mid-ranged hunting crossbow

Who This Bow is Best For

Looking for a price-friendly hunting crossbow that’s an upgrade to your budget bow? The Whitetail Pro STR is what you’re going to give you that price point excellence.

Light, strong, and fast- the Explorer XP by Barnett is a wicked weapon. This crossbow is best for the hunter who needs a lightweight bow, but doesn’t want to compromise the powerful shot. The design and dimensions make handling this bow easy in tight spaces, like a tree stand.

What Makes This Crossbow Great

Barnett is listed multiple times on this year’s bow review, and their brand name runs strong in the industry. We’re happy to include their Explorer XP for our best all-around crossbow for the money.

Great to see, managing a safe shot is easy to do with the XP’s mechanism to switch from safe to fire. This bow comes stocked with TriggerTech Frictionless Release Technology which creates an extremely smooth trigger experience.

Who This Bow is Best For

Oftentimes, we can experience difficulty shooting accurately past 20 yards, but the red dot scope that’s included with the Explorer XP is going to help you shoot on. This crossbow boasts great speed at 400 feet per second, and with a price tag under $500, you just can’t beat it.

To add, the Archery Heat’s design has an adjustable cheek piece to allow the hunter to get a custom fit for eye alignment with the scope. If you’ve ever had a crossbow that didn’t fit just right, you know how great this feature aids an accurate shot.

Safety is an important feature to review before selecting your next crossbow, and the Archery Heat comes equipped with an anti-dry fire trigger that protects the shooter from mistakenly shooting without an arrow in place.

The pros column above lists this crossbow as having a quiet shot, and it sure does. The Whisper Silencing System creates a silent shot, due to the included string and limb dampeners for ultimate noise reduction and vibration control. It’s awesome.

Helpful Information About buying a Crossbow

How To Choose The Right Crossbow For You?

When researching to find the best crossbow for you, consider the following aspects:

Purpose

Do you plan to use the bow often, such as weekly or more? If so, we’d recommend looking at bows at the $600 range and up. These bows will provide you with the features to keep you satisfied, as well as the durability to last a lot of outings.

If you’re planning to use the crossbow for backyard target practice, the need for a powerful, compact bow is probably less important.

Quality is a vital aspect to a bow when you’re hours from home and in the midst of a hunting trip. For example, you would never want your string to snap on a hunting trip, yet this is known to happen when you purchase a bow on the cheap side.

Specs:

The most important spectacles to examine when researching which crossbow to choose are the following:

  • Brand
  • Price
  • Speed (Feet Per Second)
  • Weight
  • Length
  • Width- cocked and uncocked
  • Power stroke

Speed

It’s fun to go fast, and it feels great to shoot something fast. Contrary to what I read in some places on the internet, I do believe speed matters. It should be said, however, that speed matters most to hunters, and less for those on the archery field.

The game we hunt is fast, and although in my own experience, it’s much more rare to shoot at a game while it’s running, every second counts.

Weight

Weight can be a big issue. Add two pounds or take off two pounds, and this is an aspect about the architecture of a bow that you will notice not long after carrying it around for a while.

Width

Width, or the amount that a crossbow is compact or not is largely a personal preference to each individual shooter. I’m a huge fan of compact bows. Their mobility and a narrow design is all I personally like to shoot. On the other hand, I know hunters that like a wide bow because it facilitates a balanced shot.

Power Stroke

The length of a crossbow’s power stroke is the most significant factor that contributes to a bow’s arrow speed. Crossbows with a shorter power stroke produce slower arrow speeds, compared to crossbows with a longer power stroke.

A bow’s power stroke is the equivalent to a vertical bow’s draw length. It is the length that the crossbow’s string travels from a cocked position to an uncocked, shot position. A longer power stroke creates more kinetic energy.

What Are The Best Crossbow Brands?

Competition is fierce these days when it comes to quality crossbows. To ensure you purchase a high-end, brand-trusted company, we recommend the following:

Design Architecture: Compound vs. Reverse vs. Recurve

What Is A Compound Crossbow?

Compound crossbows, which are the most popular design in the United States these days, is a style of crossbow which uses a system of pulleys and cables to generate a powerful shot from the limbs of the bow.

Compound crossbows are easily distinguished by the cams, or wheels, which pull the cables to cock the bow and ready the arrow.

An example can be viewed from the picture below, which is the Barnett HyperGhost.

What Is A Reverse Crossbow?

A reverse crossbow, also called a reverse-draw crossbow, is still a compound crossbow. The difference is that the riser on the bow is situated closer to the shooter’s body.

A reverse-draw crossbow shifts the weight closer to the body. As a result, reverse-draw crossbows are easier to shoot from an off-hand position.

Reverse-draw crossbows’s power stroke is longer, which generates higher speeds without adding additional mass or length.

Below is an example of a reverse-draw crossbow. This is the Scorpyd Deathstalker 420.

What Is A Recurve Crossbow?

Recurve crossbows are known for the simple, minimalistic architecture. A recurve crossbow does not have wheels or the system of cables and pulleys. The bow is curved and wider to gain power in the shot from pulling the string back to cock the bow and ready the arrow.

Here is an example from the SA Sports Empire Muddy Girl Fever Pro:

How Much Of A Difference Does Price Make?

Like for many outdoor activities, the quality of the product you get depends a lot on the amount you are currently familiar with using these types of products.

Let me give you an example, I’m not much of a golfer. I might play a game a year. Give me a $100 driver or a $700 and although I’ll feel a difference, it won’t matter much to me. I’m going to slice it either way.

Crossbows are like that too. There’s no need to get the top of the line product if you’re not ready to handle it. On the other hand, if you know how to shoot, you’re going to appreciate the higher-notch bow, and also use it appropriately as well.

Each bow enthusiast needs to find a medium between what they can afford, what they’re looking to use the bow for. Then, you’ll find a great match.

When Do 2020 Crossbows Come Out?

Each year, crossbow manufacturers first show off their newest flagship models at the Archery Trade Association’s trade show. The date and place are tentative, but happen roughly around the second week of January each year.

Can A Crossbow Kill You?

Yes, crossbows are lethal weapons designed to kill. They are dangerous and need to be handled carefully.

Is Using A Crossbow Cheating?

States in the U.S. have their own laws towards crossbow hunting, which can be found at the North American Crossbow Federation. For countries around the world, Wikipedia has a page titled, Laws on Crossbows.

Each hunter should abide by the laws of their land. Now, is using a crossbow cheating? The answer to this is a person question, and it revolves around your own hunting philosophy. Some hunters believe if the weapon they’re using is legal, it’s not cheating. Some purists might believe the only way is to hide in a tree and jump down on the game, but then you’ll have the critics saying that’s probably not an ethic kill. I’m joking, but the point is, weapons are tools to kill, and as long as you’re following the local laws, know that hunting with a vertical bow is going to be harder than a crossbow, and a crossbow is going to be harder than a rifle.

What Is A Good FPS For Crossbows?

This is an interesting question and it depends on the purpose for why you’re shooting. If you’re shooting for archery practice, a longer draw weight will produce more power, and you can learn to shoot further distances. On the other hand, if you’re shooting to hunt, I prefer a crossbow that will at least reach 300 feet per second.

Now this question can also branch out to, “How much energy is needed to ethically kill an animal?” The answer depends on the size of the animal and where it was shot. Similar to the answer above, an arrow speed of 300 fps and higher for a whitetail is plenty.

Which Crossbow Brands Are Made In The USA?

This is a tough straight answer. Lots of crossbow companies are created in the U.S. and their products are designed in the U.S., but bits, pieces, and sometimes the whole bow or accessories are manufactured abroad.

From my research, it looks like the following companies’ crossbows are made in the U.S:

  • TenPoint
  • Wicked Ridge
  • Horton
  • Barnett
  • Mission
  • Scorpyd
  • Hickory Creek

How Long Will A Crossbow Last?

A quality crossbow will last 10+ years with proper care of the cams, cables, strings, and trigger.

How Far Can A Crossbow Shoot?

A modern crossbow can shoot at a distance of up to 500 yards. However, the distance depends on the following factors:

  • The amount of kinetic energy your bow can produce
  • The weight and design of the arrow
  • Weather conditions
  • Your shooting technique
  • And for distance plus accuracy, this largely depends on your scope

Hunting is a game of strategy, technique and of probability. The most successful crossbow hunters choose wisely. I do not recommend shooting at game beyond 50 yards. Simply put, the reason for this is that the longer the distance, the higher the probability of losing the game for reasons such as physical obstruction, wind interference, a decrease in arrow speed, or even an animal “jumping the string”.

If you’re shooting game, we like to remember the phrase, “Hunt responsibility, shoot ethically.”

Regarding this last point, the noise of the shot fired can alert the animal and send it moving, which can result in a wounded animal. Poorly placed shots can get messy, and I like to avoid them every time I can.

Beginning shooters should stick to under 30 yards. Average shooters should set their maximum at 40 yards, and real good shooters should limit their shots for animals at 50 yards.

Do Special Forces Use Crossbows?

These days, the military in the Americas equips and trains soldiers with crossbows not for warfare, but for establishing a zip-line in difficult terrain.

How Fast Does A Crossbow Shoot In MPH?

All measurements are approximate:

100 FPS  = 68 MPH

200 FPS = 136 MPH

300 FPS = 205 MPH

400 FPS = 273 MPH

Are Crossbows Hard To Pull Back?

Different crossbows have varying draw weights. Remember that you draw the bow by placing the crossbow on the ground and holding it with your foot, or both feet, and drawing the string using two hands.

What you can do if you’re sure you’d like the extra assistance is pick up a rope cocking device or a crank cocking device that fits the crossbow you’re looking at.

A rope cocking device will set you back less than a crank, and they can be a great alternative for the price if you’re able to evenly cock the bow.

Crank cocking devices are great because they help produce consistent shots. The downside is that they often make more noise than you’d like.

Is There A Background Check To Buy A Crossbow?

No, there is no background check necessary to purchase a crossbow.
